セルゲーイ・ボルシャコーフ『ロシアの神秘家たち』概要と感想～ロシアの偉大なる修道士たちの歴史
本日はあかし書房出版の古谷功訳、セルゲーイ・ボルシャコーフ『ロシアの神秘家たち』をご紹介します。
The author, Sergey Bolshakov, was born in St. Petersburg in 1901, became a doctor of philosophy at Oxford University in 1943, and later lived at the Oustrive Monastery in Switzerland.
The book is unique in that it carefully introduces the life and thought of each of the great Russian monks.
The author goes back to the end of the 15th century and explains in this book how the idea was passed down from there to the 20th century.
Of particular importance is the chapter written about St. Tikhon, who was renowned in the 18th century. St. Tikhon's ideas greatly influenced later monks and elders, and Dostoevsky was also impressed by his ideas and life, an impression reflected in his writing of "The Brothers Karamazov" and "Evil Spirits.

聖ティーホンの人格はロシアにおいて、大衆や修道者たちばかりでなく、数名の高名なロシア人たちによって、大いに称賛された。特にそれは偉大なロシアの天才、フョードル・ドストエーフスキイを感動させ、その最大の小説「カラマーゾフの兄弟」において、ゾシーマ長老の像を彼をモデルに作り上げた。
ゾシーマの中にドストエーフスキイはティーホン的霊性を表現しようとしたが、部分的にしか成功しなかった。ゾシーマには偉大なオープティナの長老アムブローシイ神父のいくつかの特徴も含まれていて、ドストエーフスキイは彼を個人的に訪問している。

ドストエーフスキイの全小説は、今ソ連で再版されており、きわめて広く読まれている。宗教書や神学書の出版が許されていなかったり、書店で売ることが全くできない時代に、ドストエーフスキイの偉大な小説は、ロシアの大衆や特に青年たちの前に、キリストの像やロシアの長老の像を掲げ続ける。

The content is quite specialized and may be tough for the beginning student. If you have read the introductory book on Russian Orthodoxy and are interested in learning more, this is a very worthwhile work.
