石鍋真澄『ベルニーニ バロック美術の巨星』概要と感想～おすすめ伝記！これを読めばローマがもっと好きになる！
今回ご紹介するのは２０１０年に吉川弘文館より発行された石鍋真澄著『ベルニーニ バロック芸術の巨星』です。

This work is a biography that tells the story of Bernini, an artistic genius active in Rome in the 17th century.
Bernini is best known for this work in St. Peter's Basilica.
When I first saw Baldacchino, I was struck speechless by its unique appearance.

著者は本書の「序」でこの作品について次のように述べています。
本書は、べルニーニについての研究書というより、ベルニーニとローマ・バロック美術の世界への入門書である。だから筆者は、諸家の研究に、てきるだけ公正な態度で接し、その中から信ずるに足ると思われる説や解釈を採用するとともに、可能な限りそれを自分の眼で確かめるように努めた。また、作品の分析だけでなく、べルニーニの人柄や当時の時代背景にも留意し、ベルニーニの芸術について総合的な理解が得られるように心がけた。
こうした本書に幾汗かの取り柄があるとすれば、それは第一に、彫刻や建築だけでなく祝祭の演出や演劇などにわたる、広汎なべルニーニの活動全体を扱っているという点、そして第二に、このところ急速に進んだベルニーニ研究の成果を、できるだけとり入れたという点、の二点だといえよう。現在のところこの二点を充たす書物は外国語でもないからである。
また、著者は一年間にわたるローマ滞在中に、ほとんどの作品を実地に見ながら本書を著わした。この実地の体験や感動が記述に少しでも反映しているならば、それも取り柄といえるかもしれない。

著者が「序」で述べるように、本書ではこれら珠玉のベルニーニ作品が解説されていきます。
この語りが素晴らしく、読んでいてすぐに引き込まれてしまいました。
しかも当時のローマの時代背景を知れる点も非常にありがたいです。なぜベルニーニはこのような傑作を残すことができたのか、その裏側を知ることができるこの作品はとにかく刺激的です。

This was one of those books that gave me a strong sense that if you know Bernini, you can see things in a new light.
I am sure that when I visit Rome again, I will see a different Rome from the last time.
