今回ご紹介するのは１６０６年から１６０７年頃にシェイクスピアによって書かれた『アントニーとクレオパトラ』です。私が読んだのは新潮社版福田恆存訳２０１４年第３９刷版です。

ジュリアス・シーザーと言うと「誰？」となってしまうかもしれませんが、ローマ式の読みだと「シーザー（CAESAR）」は「カエサル」になります。
カエサルといえばルビコン川を渡ったあのカエサルです。

これらの言葉も一度は聞いたことのある名言ですよね。
このシーザーを暗殺したブルータスと、そのブルータスを名演説によって倒したアントニーを巡る物語が前作『ジュリアス・シーザー』になります。
Antony's performance in the previous film was tremendous. His famous speeches were overwhelming and enthralling. It was a scene that clearly showed what an effective politician he is, and it left a very strong impression on me as well.
And now, "Antony and Cleopatra" is the story of such a talented politician Antony, but we see a different Antony from the previous one, a useless Antony.
Why does Antony, who was so capable, continue to roll down the slope of doom, and what is the cause, Cleopatra?
Antony is infatuated with Cleopatra. He is so consumed with love that the energy he should be directing toward politics and military affairs is increasingly depleted.
Cleopatra is, in French literary parlance, a veritable femme fatale, nothing short of a demonic woman who destroys men.
But interestingly, in this piece, Cleopatra is also infatuated with Antony.
For Antony, Cleopatra was an irresistible love interest, and for Cleopatra it was the same.
However, they were both in a position to make political decisions in Rome and Egypt. There is no way that the story can end with a simple love story in which these two are united in love and happily ever after.
Rome is a city of intrigue, and in Egypt, political games are being played for the survival of the nation. Antony was in love and made a series of political blunders, which ultimately led to his downfall.

This work is very interesting to read in the vein of "Julius Caesar" to get a sense of the grand rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
最後にこの本の巻末に収録されているクレオパトラについての解説をここで紹介したいと思います。これを読めばこの作品の大まかな流れと、この作品が歴史的にどのような位置づけに当たるのかがよくわかります。
クレオパトラ
エジプトのプトレマイオス王朝の女王歴代の通称―中略―最も有名なのはプトレマイオス十一世の女、前六九年（あるいは前六八年）生れ。
十七歳で弟と共に王位に就き、エジプトの慣習に随い、弟の妻となる。数年後、女王の位を剥奪され、逐われてシリアに退いたが、復権の機会をねらって軍備を怠らなかった。
丁度その頃、ジュリアス・シーザーがポンぺイを追ってエジプトに侵入して来た。シーザーはクレオパトラの魅力に捉えられ、そのために戦いを起した。弟のプトレマイオスは戦死し、クレオパトラはその下の弟と共にニたび王位に就くが、その弟も間もなく毒殺してしまった。
その後、クレオパトラはローマに行き、シーザーが暗殺されるまで、公然とその妾として共に暮した。暗殺が起ると、自分の不評を知っていたクレオパトラは直ちにエジプトに帰った。が、引続いてマーク・アントニーの同盟者かつ妾となった。二人の結附きがローマ人の激しい不評を招くに至り、オクテイヴィアスは二人を相手に軍を起し、アクチャムに戦って大勝した。（前三一年）
クレオパトラはアレクサンドリアに逃げ帰り、アントニーも後を追ってそこに至った。クレオパトラは結局勝目なしと悟り、アントニーを暗殺すべしというオクテイヴィアスの要求を受入れ、かつてアントニーと共に死ぬために造った廟に彼を呼ぶが、アントニーは既にクレオパトラが自殺してしまったという虚報を信じて、先に自殺してしまった。
クレオパトラはオクテイヴィアスが自分の魅力に惑わされぬと知り、言伝えによると、毒蛇アスプを胸に当てがって、みずから命を絶った。（前三〇年八月二十九日）
クレオパトラの死と共に、プトレマイオス王朝は滅亡し、エジプトはローマ領になる。クレオパトラにはアントニーとの間に三人の子があり、シーザーとの間に出来た男子シーザリオンはオクテイヴィアスに処刑されたという。

クレオパトラが絶世の美女だったということは有名ですが、実際に彼女がどんな人生を送ったのかというのは意外と盲点ですよね。私も今回この解説を読んで「ほぉ！そうだったのか」と改めて驚きました。
アントニーの前はシーザーとも恋愛関係にあったというのも驚きでしたし、ローマ帝国とここまで深い関係があったのかと驚かされました。逆に言えばローマ帝国と深いつながりがあったからこそこうして歴史に名を残したというのもあるかもしれません。
『アントニーとクレオパトラ』はこうした古代ローマ帝国の大きな歴史の流れも感じることができる作品です。この作品だけを単独で読むのはかなり厳しいとは思いますが『ジュリアス・シーザー』を読んだ後にこの作品を読めばその面白さを感じることができるのではないかと思います。
It is a masterpiece that should be read in combination with "Julius Caesar".
