Tang-period Chinese chronicleBuddhism in India

Xuanzang's Journey to the Western Regions of the Tang Dynasty - Xuanzang Sanzo's quest for Buddhism in India, which became the model for the "Journey to the West"!

The current work, "Datang Saiyuki" is the model for that "Journey to the West".

He is so famous in Japan that the name "Sanzang-hōshi" (a Buddhist monk) is synonymous with Genjo. He became world-famous for his feat of traveling all the way from China to India in search of the Sanzang (a group of sutras: sutra, law, and treatise) and safely bringing a large number of sutras back to China.

This work, "Records of the Western Regions of the Tang Dynasty," is a book that describes the journey of Xuanzang.

But as soon as you start reading this book, you realize that the narrative is so bland...

It's quite different from the exciting adventure stories we imagine...

biography of Hōken, a high priestBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

The Biography of High Priest Hoken (Butsuguoki) - The earliest record of a trip to India by a Chinese monk! What was the grueling journey of Hoken, who also came to Sri Lanka to seek the Dharma?

I decided to read this work by Hoken because I was intrigued by the fact that he had visited Sri Lanka in the early 400s.

The Biography of Dharma Sangha" is a very concise yet wonderful travelogue that reveals his personality. After the epic journey in the first half of the book, we are excited to see more and more Buddhist sites in India, which we are all familiar with.

Hoken's journey was a long one, spanning more than 10 years. By the time he returned to Japan, he was almost 80 years old, an amazing feat of vitality. It is unbelievable! A great man who has left his mark on the history of the world has a different scale.

Sri Lankan Politics after the End of the Civil WarBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Etsuyo Arai, "Sri Lankan Politics after the End of the Civil War" - Recommended for understanding how the Rajapaksa regime deepened its relationship with China and what followed.

This book provides an overview of the political situation in Sri Lanka from the end of the civil war that took place between 1983 and 2009 until 2016.

It was especially gratifying to hear a detailed account of the main character in the book, President Rajapaksa, a politician who ruled the country on an almost dictatorial level and whose family and inner circle became enormously wealthy and powerful. This is the very person who was forced to flee the country during the Sri Lankan riots of 2022. I remember that the 2022 Sri Lankan riots were well covered in the news.

ARC ReportBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

ARC Report Sri Lanka 2023/2024 - A political and economic report on the latest developments in Sri Lanka.

Can we somehow know the latest situation in Sri Lanka: what was the economic crisis and riots in 2022? What is going on with China's One Belt One Road and what are the relations with India, USA and Japan?

Unlike India, books on the latest developments in Sri Lanka are hard to find. In fact, it is almost unheard of.

It was in this context that this book, "ARC Report: Sri Lanka 2023/2024," finally hit the market.

As the title suggests, it is truly up-to-date; the 2023 report on Sri Lanka's political economy will be in this book.

Sri Lanka's economy after the civil warBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Etsuyo Arai (ed.), The Sri Lankan Economy after the Civil War - Recommended for learning about the economic situation as of 2016 and the civil war.

Capitalism and SlaveryBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Eric Williams, Capitalism and Slavery - The accumulation of wealth through the slave trade and plantations brought about the Industrial Revolution!

This book is famous as a milestone work of historiography that overturned the established theories as expounded in Max Weber's "The Ethics of Protestantism and the Spirit of Capitalism".

The main theme of the book is precisely the argument that capital accumulated through the slave trade and slave plantations is what brought about the Industrial Revolution.

This book was also an exciting look at the course of history on a truly gigantic scale.

Once again, the reading made me realize the complexity and enormity of the world.

It is a superb work that destroys our preconceptions. Why not pick up a copy?

coffeeBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

The SDGs through Coffee" - Recommended to learn how the coffee industry, which was in crisis, is now changing!

In my last article, "The Truth About Coffee" by Antony Wilde, I learned about the dark side of the global coffee industry.

I was left scratching my head when I read that book, but in this book, "Coffee to Read the SDGs," I learned about the people and their activities that are struggling to change such a crisis-ridden coffee industry.

The text is easy to read and the book contains many photographs, so it is a work that can be easily picked up. Why not pick up a copy?

The Truth About CoffeeBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Antony Wilde, "The Truth About Coffee" - A book that sounds the alarm about the history of coffee and the unequal trade system that continues today!

What an ease it is to innocently drink deliciously without knowing anything about it.

It is clearly less psychologically burdensome that way.

But what would happen if all people became like that? No, what has happened to the world today with neoliberalism?

It may be harsh, but I think this book is one that you should have the courage to read because you are a coffee lover.

coffee goes around, world history goes aroundBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Ryuichiro Usui, "Coffee Turns and World History Turns" - Western modern society changed by coffee! A recommended book to learn about world history from the perspective of coffee!

A Global History of ChocolateBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Naoko Takeda, "The World History of Chocolate" - Recommended commentary book to learn about the transition of chocolate from modern to contemporary times and surprising information about Kit Kat.
