この本は原始仏教における思想を原典に即して見ていくところにその特徴があります。最初期の仏教教団はどのようなことを説いていたのか、そしてどのように思想が発展、体系化されていったのかを原典を読みながら解説していきます。原典の引用がとにかく膨大です。
思想面にフォーカスしてがっちり説かれるこの本は読みごたえ抜群の名著です。
