チャペックの傑作『ロボット（R.U.R）』あらすじと感想～ロボットの語源はこの作品！
今回ご紹介するのは１９２０年にカレル・チャペックによって発表された『R.U.R』です。
私が読んだのは１９８９年に岩波書店より発行された千野栄一訳の『ロボット（R.U.R）』２０２０年第２９刷版です。

The word "robot" was born in this play and spread around the world. It takes place in a factory that is solely responsible for the manufacture and sale of humanoids. The robots, who have been taking over human labor, unite in rebellion and begin to exterminate the human race. This is a prophetic work by Chapek (1890-1938), who wonders whether the development of mechanical civilization will bring happiness to human beings.

１９２０年にしてすでにロボットをテーマにしたSF小説が存在していたということに私はまず驚きました。そしてそもそも「ロボット」という言葉自体がこの作品によって生み出され世界中に広がっていったというのも驚きでした。このロボットの語源について、訳者あとがきでは次のように述べられていました。
「ロボット」は、「R・U・R」の著者力レル・チャペックがこの戯曲の中の人造人間を表現するために、兄のヨゼフからヒントを得て作った新語で、チェコ語には「賦役」を意味するrobotaという語があり、その語末のaをとったものである。チェコ語と同系のスラブ語であるロシア語にもработа（rabota）という語があって「労働」を意味する。またこの語はドイツ語のArbeit「労働」とも関係がある（ドイツ語の Arbeit の語頭の二文字をひっくり返してみるとよく分かる）。しかし、スラブ語派とゲルマン語派にまたがるこの語の言語学的説明は容易ではない。

私は今ロシア語の市民講座に通っているのですが、この解説を見て「なるほど！」と頷きました。ラボータから来ていると言われればかなりすっと入ってきます。たしかにロボットって働かせるための存在ですよね・・・
そしてこの作品について訳者あとがきでは次のように解説されています。
今日では世界のいたるところで、しかも絶えず耳にする「ロボット」という言葉を作り出し、それを世界に広めたSF劇『R・U・R－ロッスムのユニバーサルロボット』（通称『ロボット』）は、ひとりSF作品の古典であるのみならず、世界の文学の古典といっても過言ではない。
SFという文学ジャンルの性質上、時代の移り変りに敏感なため、長い期間読者の関心を引きつけておくことが難しい分野で、この『ロボット』が一九二〇年の出版以来依然として愛好されているのには、非常によく考えられているSF作品であることのほか、文学的にも優れていることがある。（中略）
長い間人間の夢であった人間が人間を作り出し、人間にとってふさわしくない仕事をその作り出された人間―ロボット―に代行させるという筋書きの作品であるが、人間が人間を作り出すというプロセスは、ドミンがへレナに説明するという方法で簡単にかたづけられている。
そして、その結果、社会にいろいろな変化がもたらされるところから作品の本筋に入る。ロボットの導入に組合が反対したり、導入が遅れたために企業が倒産するというところは、まさにこの日本でもわれわれが目のあたりにしたところであり、チャペックの他のSF作品と同様に、この作品でもSFの内容が実際にもう実現されている「近未来性」という特色が示されている。

I picked up this work out of curiosity about who Chapek was, one of the leading writers of Czech literature, and was immediately taken aback when I read it.
To be clear, it is extremely interesting! I was just shocked that such a work existed in the Czech Republic! I was just shocked.
The plot is simple. At first, the robot simply works, but eventually it develops a "will" and attacks humans. No, this work may have paved the way for later science fiction novels. I am not an expert on the history of science fiction novels, so I don't know exactly what happened, but I can only tip my hat to the imagination of Chapek, who created a science fiction novel with such a high degree of perfection in 1920.
And not only is the scenario interesting, but what another profound analysis of human beings by Chapek...!
What is a human being, and what is the difference between a human being and a robot? In this work, he asks what makes human beings human. Robot manufacturing will also change the meaning of "labor" in the world. Furthermore, the world economy will be drastically changed. What will happen to the lives of human beings when mechanization advances to its limits?
しかもこうしたことを彼一流のユーモア溢れる筆致で描いていくので単に暗くて重たい作品にはなっていないのです。これは恐るべき才能だと思います。テーマ自体はものすごく重いのです。ですが彼のユーモアによってそれが絶妙に軽さを与えられています。ですのでとにかく読みやすい。そして面白い。ページをめくる手が止まりません。私は時間も忘れて一気に読んでしまいました。これほどの作品に出会えるのはなかなかありません。これは名作中の名作と言っても過言ではありません。凄まじい作品です。
Generally speaking, Prague Czech literature is first associated with Kafka.
But wait a minute. Here is a genius to be feared..!
