This book is a recommended introduction to Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka.

The author states the following in the introduction to this book

Sri Lanka, once called "Ceylon," is now about 2,200 years after the arrival of Buddhism from India. The country, which should be called the origin of Theravada Buddhism, has many excellent stupas, temples, statues, and paintings of Buddha throughout its long history.

Its history can be traced to the remains of three major capitals, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy. Other unique sites of note include the sacred mountain of Mihintale, the site of the first transmission of Buddhism, the rocky mountain of Sigiriya, and the cave temple of Dambulla, also on a rocky mountain.

This book introduces major Buddhist monuments and their representative works of art in chronological order from the oldest to the newest, following the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. In order to do so, we will include not only the major ancient capitals and monuments, but also local Mahayana Buddhist monuments and art.

I will present the photographs I have taken so far to tell the story of classical Sri Lankan art of the past and the teachings and stories behind the creation of this art. I hope that many people will become familiar with the greatness of Sri Lankan Buddhist art, and that they will love it even more than they do today.

In recent years, pilgrimages to Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka have become very popular, even from Japan. We present here the stupas, temples, statues, and paintings that we have seen and admired in Sri Lanka. We hope that this humble book will be of some help in understanding Sri Lankan culture, arts and fine arts.

Yuzankaku, Teruji Ito, An Introduction to Sri Lankan Buddhist Art, P1-2

As described here, this book will look at major Buddhist sites such as Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy, as well as other distinctive Buddhist sites.

This book, in any case, contains a large number of photographs, which make it easy to visualize the local situation. In addition, the explanations are written in an easy-to-understand manner for beginners, making this a very welcome introductory work.

For my part, I was particularly impressed by the commentary on seagirias among them.

Sigiriya is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Sri Lanka, but surprisingly, there are not many books that explain the history and art of this place. This book explains the history of this rocky mountain and the Sigiriya Lady painted on it in an easy-to-understand manner, which was very helpful for me as I am planning to visit the area.

I highly recommend this work to anyone who is going to Sri Lanka or is interested in Sri Lankan Buddhism. This book can be a guidebook for sightseeing. Why not pick up a copy?
