この本では名俳優スタニスラフスキーの生涯を見ていくことになります。スタニスラフスキーは『俳優の仕事（旧訳は『俳優修業』）』という本で有名で世界の演劇界において凄まじい影響力を持ち、日本でもバイブルのように読まれていたそうです。その演劇論は「スタニスラフスキー・システム」と呼ばれ、今でもその影響力は健在なようです。

また、この本は単にスタニスラフスキーの生涯をなぞるのではなく、当時の時代背景も掘り下げていきます。そしてその時代背景においてスタニスラフスキーをはじめとした演劇人がどのように動いていたのかを知ることができます。
