Tomoyuki Wada, "Hijackers in Search of the Hijackers: Heroes of Sri Lanka" - A highly recommended work that details the circumstances of the Sri Lankan Civil War!

This work, "Hunt for the Hijackers - Heroes of Sri Lanka" is highly recommended to learn about the Sri Lankan Civil War that lasted from 1983 to 2009.

As the title suggests, the author's own encounter with a hijacker led the author to Sri Lanka. The book is told through an exquisite cross between the character of the hijacker, Seppala, and the contemporary history of Sri Lanka.

It is truly a non-fiction rather than an academic book! The story of the civil war is told in a way that is easy to understand and realistic for the average reader. The book is easy to understand and realistic. I read the book in one sitting. It is very interesting.

Sri Lanka and EthnicityBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Koji Kawashima, "Sri Lanka and Ethnicity" - Recommended to learn more about Sinhala nationalism and the ethnic conflict process!

Sri Lanka and Ethnicity: The Formation of Sinhala Nationalism and Minority Groups" is unique in its ability to examine the formation of ethnic conflict in detail by individual ethnic and religious group. In particular, the book focuses on the anti-immigrant movement of the 1930s and 1940s.

This book gives us a new perspective on the Sri Lankan civil war.

I read this book and said, "What? That's right!" I was also surprised at the number of times I found myself saying, "Oh, I didn't know that!

This book is a must read for anyone interested in the Sri Lankan civil war and political process. I highly recommend this work.

Ceylon MagazineBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Robert Knox's "The Ceylon Island Magazine" Synopsis and Comments - The amazing true story of the late 1600s, which was also the model for Robinson Crusoe!

Robert Knox (1641-1720), the author of this work, was a sailor on a trading ship of the British East India Company. His ship was caught in a storm during a voyage in the Indian Ocean and made a port call in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1660. From there, they lived as prisoners of war in the Kingdom of Kandy in central Sri Lanka for almost 20 years.

The area around Kandy was not only highland, but also covered with deep jungle, making it extremely difficult to move around. In other words, it is an isolated island on land. This book, "Ceylon Island Journal," describes Knox's experience of escaping from such a difficult situation over a period of 20 years.

Tang-period Chinese chronicleBuddhism in India

Xuanzang's Journey to the Western Regions of the Tang Dynasty - Xuanzang Sanzo's quest for Buddhism in India, which became the model for the "Journey to the West"!

The current work, "Datang Saiyuki" is the model for that "Journey to the West".

He is so famous in Japan that the name "Sanzang-hōshi" (a Buddhist monk) is synonymous with Genjo. He became world-famous for his feat of traveling all the way from China to India in search of the Sanzang (a group of sutras: sutra, law, and treatise) and safely bringing a large number of sutras back to China.

This work, "Records of the Western Regions of the Tang Dynasty," is a book that describes the journey of Xuanzang.

But as soon as you start reading this book, you realize that the narrative is so bland...

It's quite different from the exciting adventure stories we imagine...

biography of Hōken, a high priestBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

The Biography of High Priest Hoken (Butsuguoki) - The earliest record of a trip to India by a Chinese monk! What was the grueling journey of Hoken, who also came to Sri Lanka to seek the Dharma?

I decided to read this work by Hoken because I was intrigued by the fact that he had visited Sri Lanka in the early 400s.

The Biography of Dharma Sangha" is a very concise yet wonderful travelogue that reveals his personality. After the epic journey in the first half of the book, we are excited to see more and more Buddhist sites in India, which we are all familiar with.

Hoken's journey was a long one, spanning more than 10 years. By the time he returned to Japan, he was almost 80 years old, an amazing feat of vitality. It is unbelievable! A great man who has left his mark on the history of the world has a different scale.

Sri Lanka's economy after the civil warBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Etsuyo Arai (ed.), The Sri Lankan Economy after the Civil War - Recommended for learning about the economic situation as of 2016 and the civil war.

I am very grateful for this book, which allowed me to see Sri Lanka in a new light. It was a very stimulating book. I encourage everyone to pick up a copy.

Sri Lanka, the Holy LandBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

The Sacred Land of Sri Lanka: Rituals and Practices of Living Buddhism" edited by Tamotsu Aoki - Recommended work to learn more about actual religious practices in the area.

Mahayana Buddhism in Sri LankaBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Mori Sodo, "Mahayana Buddhism in Sri Lanka" - Mahayana took root in Sri Lanka, a country famous for Theravada Buddhism! And the transition of the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

Sri Lanka is often taken for granted as a Theravada country, and the existence of Mahayana Buddhism has been largely neglected.

In fact, the Mahayana Buddhist tradition in Sri Lanka itself ceased to exist in the late 12th century, but culture is an interesting thing, and it is possible for a culture to "officially cease to exist, but continue to exist in a different form.

As I mentioned in the title of this article, this phenomenon of the transition of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has been integrated into Sri Lanka.

No - Sri Lanka is interesting! This book was also very inspiring. You should definitely pick up a copy.

Religion and Society in Sri LankaBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

Masataka Suzuki, "Religion and Society in Sri Lanka" - A great book to learn about Sri Lankan Buddhism from a cultural anthropological perspective!

前回の記事で紹介した『現代スリランカの上座仏教』ではスリランカの仏教を体系的に学ぶことができましたが、本書では仏教を超えてスリランカの民族宗教や聖地巡礼についても学ぶことができます。

I especially appreciated the explanations about Lord Katharagama, who is fervently worshipped by Sinhala Buddhists in Sri Lanka, and Mount Sree Parda, which is worshipped by people of all religions.

I was very grateful for this book, which allowed me to learn about the reality of Sri Lankan religion in an easy-to-understand manner from the unique perspective of a cultural anthropologist, which is different from that of a Buddhist scholar.
