Novelization of the greatest scenario of the 20th century! Synopsis and Impressions of "Metal Gear Solid Substance I: Shadow Mosses" by Kazuto Nojima.

I would like to introduce "Metal Gear Solid Substance I: Shadow Mosses" by Kazuto Nojima, published by Kadokawa Bunko in 2015.

This work is a novelization of the game METAL GEAR SOLID, which has been called the best scenario of the 20th century.

So far in this blog, we have updated articles about totalitarianism and the Cold War era. And while we have recently introduced a novel dealing with totalitarianism, in this article we would like to talk about a work from one of Japan's most popular video games, the "Metal Gear" series.

The "Metal Gear" series of games was created under the direction of Hideo Kojima, and its scenarios are based on Cold War, anti-war, and anti-nuclear themes.

Hiding from detection and infiltrating enemy bases. The tactical espionage action "Metal Gear" series was born in 1987 as an MSX2 exclusive title. The series then moved on to the original PlayStation, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Portable. Regarded as the best story of the 20th century and the best game system of the 21st century, the "Metal Gear" series can be read as a saga. It is the story of two protagonists, Big Boss and Solid Snake, who have been fighting the world for almost 50 years, from the 1960s to the 2010s. They have been at the mercy of the changing "SCENE (era)" while fighting against the fate of the "GENE (gene)" and telling stories to preserve the "MEME (cultural gene)" for the future. Herein lies the "truth that no one knows, which is never recorded in history.

And to see what this game is actually about, you can quickly watch the following video.

Now, I have never actually played this game "Metal Gear" series.

But I am a big fan of this series.

What this means is that the Metal Gear series has been novelized (adapted into a novel) and the scenario can be read as a work of art.

I originally came across this Metal Gear series through Keisuke Ito'sgenocidal OrganIt was inspired by a science fiction novel called And that Keisuke ItoMetal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the PatriotsI started reading it when I found out that he had published a novelization of the series. From there, it wasn't long before I was hooked on the Metal Gear series.

Now, let's take a look at "Metal Gear Solid Substance I: Shadow Mosses" by Kazuto Nojima.

Snake goes undercover alone on the isolated Alaskan island of Shadow Mosses. The new nuclear weapon, Metal Gear, and the terrorist mastermind, Liquid. The mission was supposed to end when he defeated them. However, there is a terrible conspiracy. A hostage dies suddenly and mysteriously, metahumans stand in his way, his comrades betray him, and he has a history with Liquid. What awaits Snake, who tries to prevent the threat of nuclear war, is a startling revelation. The hidden truth of Shadow Mosses finally emerges!

As I mentioned earlier, this work is so accomplished that it has been called the best scenario of the 20th century. It goes completely beyond the realm of a mere game.

The depth of the scenario and the message that this work has to offer.METAL GEAR SOLID nakedThe following is explained in the following section.

Micro and macro chaos. Metal Gear Solid" was a game that encompassed both huge and miniscule themes that were raised in the "post-Cold War" world of the 1990s.

One is the issue of "nuclear weapons" proliferating around the world. The other is the question of the extent to which genes control human destiny.

In 1991, the United States and the Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty I (START I), which reduced the number of strategic nuclear warheads to 6,000 over the next seven years. Since then, however, more than 26,000 nuclear warheads have remained in the world, and there are reports that countless nuclear weapons have leaked out of Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is a modern-day crisis in which the "theory of deterrence" is collapsing. Metal Gear Solid" boldly addresses this theme.

The Metal Gear Rex, a nuclear-powered walking tank that appears in the game, is a fictional weapon that nullifies "nuclear deterrence": it has a mechanism to fire nuclear warheads with a railgun (magnetic gun) developed under the SDI concept (Star Wars Project) and neutralizes radar. These ideas are born from a combination of existing technologies. If only the problem of the cost of operating a railgun could be solved, it could be a reality.

The other theme, the genetic issue, is even deeper. Metal Gear Solid" is the story of two soldiers, Liquid Snake and Solid Snake, who have inherited the genes of Big Boss, the most powerful soldier of the 70's U.S. Army. That is the theme of this film.

Human genes were largely deciphered in the 2000s by researchers in many countries. Although it has not been clarified which factors determine human personality, it has been possible to produce cloned animals by implanting genes into the cell nucleus. Although human cloning is prohibited for ethical reasons, cloning of sheep, plants, and other animals already exists.

Liquid, a bastard child of cloning technology, has a deep complex about Solid, who shares the same birth. He "mistakenly" believes that he is a collection of recessive genes and that he is the "heir to a gene of low ability. A recessive gene is essentially a gene that is difficult to express. There is nothing superior or inferior about the gene itself. It is this misunderstanding that accelerates Liquid's misfortune.

Kojima commented that there is an important theme here. Genetic predominance and recessiveness are merely assumptions made by liquidators. Essentially, genes are not a prediction of the future, but only a kind of plan. Even if you have your own genetic program, you should be able to change it by your own will and way of life. That was what I wanted to convey in "Metal Gear Solid.

What kind of life should we choose amidst the micro and macro issues of the post-Cold War era? This is the question that this film poses, and it is a work of art in the skin of a game. That is the true nature of this work.

How about this? Just by reading this, you can get a sense of how much this work is carried through the major themes.

Cold War, nuclear, genetic.

It is this perfect combination of grand themes and storytelling that has led to the creation of what has been called the greatest narrative of the 20th century.

impressions

Now, "METAL GEAR SOLID" is such an epic story, and this novelization is also wonderful.

The book is full of realism and reads as if the images were floating in front of your eyes.

And after all, I am still numb to the scenario of this story.

The protagonist, Snake, does not simply fight the enemy.

Why do I fight? Through the mission, you will be confronted with the question of who you are in the first place.

At first, the situation is completely unclear, but one unexpected event after another occurs, and each time Snake overcomes it.

The author, Kazuto Nojima, is also a very good storyteller. Instead of simply following the game scenario, he entertains us readers with devices unique to novelization. At first I was puzzled by the format, but as I read on, I learned the meaning behind it and roared, "This is amazing! I was surprised at the meaning behind it as I read on.

And here is something I would highly recommend to everyone.

This video will be edited from the game "Metal Gear Solid" and composed like a single film.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who has never played the game.

As I mentioned earlier, I have never played this game. I am someone who got hooked on the Metal Gear series from the novelization.

This is a great video that even I was able to learn about the world of Metal Gear. It is extremely interesting. It goes completely beyond the realm of games. If you watch it, you will be surprised at how interesting and deep it is.

I would definitely recommend this video along with the novelization work.
