If you want to know the ideas in Chekhov's works, this is the one! Seiro Sato, "The World of Chekhov's Art" Overview and Impressions

Chekhov (1860-1904)Wikipedia.

In my last article, I wrote about Mr. Seiro Sato'sThe Life of ChekhovI have introduced "Chekhov's Life and Works," but I have told you that that work is dedicated to Chekhov's life and does not contain much commentary on individual works.

What would you recommend to learn about Chekhov's works and his ideas?

The World of Chekhov's Art" was published by Chikuma Shobo in 1980.

This book is dedicated to explaining Chekhov's works and elucidating the ideas contained in them. All of Chekhov's works are easy to read, but the depth of the ideas contained in them is astonishing.

This book is a wonderful aid in learning more about the interest and depth of Chekhov's work.

In his postscript, Sato describes the characteristics of Chekhov's literature as follows.

I have long held the view that Chekhov's literature is a literature of awakening and escape.

What are we awakening to and what are we escaping from?

It is to become aware of oneself who is trapped in something, to awaken to the freedom of one's mind, to escape from the "box" one has been stuck in, from convention, stagnation, mannerism, opportunism, etc., and to become a human being. It is independence of spirit.

Chikuma Shobo, Seiro Sato, The World of Chekhov's Art, p. 365

"To become aware of what is holding you back, and to aim for freedom of mind."

This seems to be the spirit of Buddhism as well.

When I read Chekhov's works, I often felt as if this were a Buddhist book.

He had written stories that were so Buddhist that his novels could be used directly as Buddhist textbooks. This was a surprise.

The World of Chekhov's Art" provides an easy-to-understand explanation of why Chekhov came to have such ideas.

I will introduce Chekhov's works in the future, but basically I would like to read them with reference to this work.

I feel that among the many reference books on Chekhov, it is hard to find one that addresses each of his works as clearly and in as much depth as this book does.

Highly recommended. This is a great book to learn about Chekhovian thought.
