WickramasingheTravels in Sri Lanka, the Holy Land of Buddhism

(54) Sri Lanka's Dostoevsky! Do you know the world famous writer Wickramasinghe?

Sri Lanka's world-renowned author Martin Wickramasinghe. Here was a tremendous writer!

The psychological descriptions are reminiscent of Dostoevsky, the storytelling is like Chekhov's, and the social observations are thorough, Zola-like. This is amazing.

Wickramasinghe's novels will be your best guide to the picture of Sri Lanka. I highly recommend this author.

Kobo Abe's "Box Man" Synopsis and Impressions - A dazzling world if you wear a box? A major influence on MGS director Hideo Kojima!

The current work, "Box Man," is indescribably exciting.

First of all, the title is a mystery to begin with. What is "The Box Man"?

I had only heard of Kobo Abe's "Hakon Otoko," but now I finally decided to read it for myself.

I had thought it was some kind of conceptual story in the image of Chekhov's "The Man in the Box," but I was surprised when I read it and found that it was really a story about a man who physically wore a box!

I highly recommend this work. I read this work as part of my study of Yukio Mishima, and it was a very enjoyable read as I could feel the differences in his style.

A Changing VillageBuddhism in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Southeast Asia

M. Wickramasinghe's "The Changing Village" Synopsis and Impressions - A masterful feature film from Sri Lanka! Also related to Dostoevsky and Chekhov!

It is a wonderful novel that is not well known in Japan, but is highly acclaimed around the world. I have actually read it and enjoyed its excellence.

It is an immersive novel, as if life in Sri Lanka appears before your eyes. This work is especially fitting for those who like Dostoevsky and Chekhov.

I will be reading the entire trilogy from now on, but this was one of those books that I felt had overwhelming quality from the start.

DostoevskyDostoevsky's works

Four recommended works of Dostoevsky! A selection of gems and masterpieces of interesting Russian literature!

Dostoevsky is a Russian literary master along with Tolstoy.

Dostoevsky is an overwhelming giant who left behind such literary masterpieces as "Crime and Punishment" and "The Brothers Karamazov. Dostoevsky plumbed the depths of the human psyche, opening up to us a profound and chaotic world. His stories, woven with his unique narrative style and strong personalities, have an indescribable black magic charm. I was one of those who were fascinated by his black magic.

In this article, we will introduce some of Dostoevsky's recommended works and reference books. We will also discuss useful information such as which translations are recommended and where to start reading.

Yukio Ninagawa and Contemporary Theater

Jean Benediti, "Stanislavsky Biography" - Recommended biography of the legendary Russian actor and director, best known for "An Actor's Work".

In this book, we will look at the life of the famous actor Stanislavsky. Stanislavsky was famous for his book "The Work of an Actor" (formerly translated as "The Actor's Training"), which had a tremendous influence on the world of theater and was read like a bible in Japan. His theatrical theory is called the "Stanislavsky System," and its influence seems to be alive and well even today.

The book also delves into the historical background of the time, rather than simply tracing Stanislavsky's life. It also provides an insight into how Stanislavsky and other theater people were operating in that historical context.
It was a very interesting book!

romanceYukio Ninagawa and Contemporary Theater

Synopsis and Impressions of "Romance" by Hisashi Inoue - A masterful comedic adaptation of Chekhov's life! I am jealous of this work..!

As I wrote in the title, as I read this piece I thought to myself, "What a brilliant piece of work...! I can't believe you produced such a work of art!" I was jealous.

This piece is just too good to be true. I love Chekhov too. But Inoue-san understands and loves Chekhov even more deeply. And he expresses his life and thought in such a fun and deep way. Every single episode in this play and the beauty of the stage development made me say, "I've been beaten! I can't take it anymore! This is too much! I could not help but sigh. How can they come up with such a joyful and beautiful play?

I have never experienced such a melting pot of jealousy while reading before.
