Tsuji昶 "Life of Victor Hugo" Summary and Impressions - Recommended biography of Hugo!

This time we would like to introduce "The Life of Victor Hugo" written by Mr. Tsuji昶 and published by Ushio Press in 1979.

Let's take a quick look at the book.

This is a critical biography of "Hugo the man" who lived dynamically during the turbulent 19th century, including the July Revolution, the February Revolution, and the Paris Commune. This powerful work sharply pursues Hugo's thoughts and actions, from his love for humanity to his flamboyant relationships with women, which he preached in his works.

Hugo was exiled to an isolated island in the English Channel after the coup d'état of Napoleon III, and spent the next nineteen years in solitary exile, devoting himself to creative writing. Hugo, who refused Napoleon III's amnesty for the deportees and said, "When freedom returns to my country, I too will return to France," and Hugo, who defended the participants of the Commune in the face of the hostility many people felt toward them. ...... This book is a reflection of Hugo's conscience and his commitment to his country. In a sense, this book is a modest tribute to Hugo's "conscience.

This work is a biography of the great French writer Victor Hugo. Author Tsujiaudacitygo by (a name)Mr. Hugo'sLes Miserables.andThe Year Ninety-Three."He is a French literature scholar who has translated such works as

The author opens the book with the following statement

Sometimes there are writers whose names are so widely publicized that they are neglected. Victor Hugo (1802-85) is one such writer in Japan. In Japan, several translations of Hugo's masterpiece "Les Misérables" (1862) are still in circulation, including the Meiji-era translation by Kuroiwa Ruika, titled "Ah, no emotion.

However, isn't the current situation in Japan that no effort is being made to deepen our knowledge of Hugo beyond that?

Aside from specialists in French literature, the general reader's knowledge of Hugo may at best extend to another of his novels, Notre-Dame de Paris (1831).

I have long regretted this and have longed to publish a comprehensive study of Hugo. I have no intention of claiming that I have been able to describe Hugo in his entirety in this pamphlet. This is only a very modest essay on "Hugo the man," but I will be happy if it helps readers to develop an interest in this poet.

As the author states here, the book conveys the author's desire for more people to know about Hugo himself.

And this biography references various past Hugo biographies and documents to explain Hugo's charms and characteristics in a way that is easy to understand for the beginning student. Especially by André Morois, who has been featured on this blog before.Victor Hugo, "Poetry, Love and Revolution."appears many times in this work.

This is one of the most highly acclaimed biographies of Hugo, and it was translated by Mr. Masayoshi Tsuji.

André Morois's "Victor Hugo, Poetry, Love, and Revolution" is a fairly naked portrait of Hugo, and if you read it, you will find more and more things that will surprise you. You will get to know Hugo to such an extent that you will be a bit taken back, to be honest.

For more information, please read the article above, but it is the biography of André Morois that will give you the naked reality of Hugo, the "giant of contradictions.

While citing such biographies, Tsuji's biography is impressive for its balanced description. The biography of Morois is too harsh. I was shocked to know that Hugo was such a person! I was shocked. In contrast, this biography has a very mild structure. (You will still be surprised by Hugo's private life.)

I think this work, which squeezes Hugo's tumultuous life into a single volume, is extremely valuable. I highly recommend this work as it is very easy to read.
