M. J. Dougherty, "Encyclopedia of Indian Mythological Tales" - A recommended commentary on the general framework and historical background of Hinduism!

この本を読んでいると、ヒンドゥー教の死生観や来世観についても知ることになります。当時の時代背景と絡めながらそれらのことを考えていくと、仏教というものがまさに「インドの文脈」から生まれてきたのだということを強く感じることになりました。

I realized once again that the very idea of Buddhism and the terms and concepts used in it came from the world of Hinduism. There are things that can be seen by going back to Buddhism and learning about Indian history and culture. This reading convinced me of that. This is interesting. I think it is a wonderful work that gives us a new perspective on Buddhism.

Tatsuo Morimoto, "Hinduism - Sacred and Secular in India" - Recommended for an introduction to India! A great book that makes you think about what religion is all about!

India is a country of mystery. This book is a fun way to learn about India, a country that even seems otherworldly, even though it is part of the same Asian region. The author's narrative is very easy to understand, and you will discover the fascinating world of India, which is complex and mysterious. It is interesting to know "why India is so unique" along with the historical background.

This was an interesting book. I feel myself getting more and more addicted to the Indian swamp.

I would highly recommend this book.

Words and Spell PowerIndian thought, culture and history

Yuto Kawamura, "Words and Spell Power: Unraveling Vedic Mythology" - What is the power of "words" that is surprisingly familiar to us? Full of discoveries that are connected to our daily lives!

I think this book is a wonderful opportunity to rethink language. It is also an enjoyable way to learn about the history and culture of ancient India, which we don't usually come into contact with.

Indus (valley) civilization (civilisation)Indian thought, culture and history

Akinori Uesugi, "Indus Civilization: Exploring the Dynamism of Civilized Society" - A reference book to learn about the complexity of the mysterious ancient India.

When we say "Buddhism was born in India," we tend to think of it as something new and independent.

In fact, however, this is not the case, and Buddhism was born in close association with the Indus civilization, or even more specifically, with the history of the world.

Until I learned about the Indus civilization in this way, I was hardly aware of the connection between Buddhism and the Indus civilization.

But after reading this book, I once again felt the grandeur and dynamism of human history. India is still interesting!

NHK Special: The Four Great Civilizations of Indus" - Many rare photos and illustrations! Recommended as an introductory book!

This book is based on an NHK Special report and is a recommended introduction to the Indus civilization.

The book presents many valuable photographs and illustrations of Dhoby Dhola, a valuable site just discovered at that time, and of the Indus civilization as a whole. It also provides an easy-to-understand explanation of the world of ancient India, which we are not usually exposed to. This book was the first book I read on the Indus Civilization, and it was a smooth read. It is a very high quality gem as an introductory book.

Schumacher, "Small is Beautiful" - Advocates Buddhist economics! A work that sounds a warning about the modern state of supremacy of economic growth.

Schumacher was a British-based economist who warned against endlessly expanding economies and advocated a shift to an economy based on coexistence with nature.

In this book, Schumacher proposes a "Buddhist economics" that seeks a sustainable economy through a Buddhist view of the world. In this book, Schumacher proposes a "Buddhist Economics" that seeks a sustainable economy through a Buddhist way of looking at the world.

In these days when there still seems to be a strong tendency to "idealize" Western Europe in its entirety, I think this book is very valuable in raising these issues. I highly recommend this book.

Nietzsche and Dostoevsky

Nietzsche's "The Antichrist (Antichrist)" Synopsis and Comments - on Dostoevsky's "The Grand Inquisitor's Chapters" and its connection to Buddhism

The Antichrist, as Kanji Nishio states, seems to me to be one of the best of Nietzsche's works. Above all, it is easy to read! And the intensity of its ideas! This book is my favorite of all Nietzsche's works. I recommend this book especially to those who like Dostoevsky.

Another interesting aspect of this work that I personally found interesting was its connection to Buddhism. In this work, Nietzsche unleashes a merciless attack on Christianity, but is quite favorable to Buddhism. In this work, we can learn why Nietzsche was so favorable to Buddhism.

Nietzsche and Dostoevsky

Chizuko Hashimoto, "Nihilism and Nothingness - Intercultural Clarification of Schopenhauer/Nietzsche and Indian Thought" - recommended for learning the connection between nihilism and Buddhist thought.

Buddha's Words of TruthBuddhist Columns & Dharma Talks

Gen Nakamura's translation of "Buddha's Words of Truth" - If you want to know the essence of primitive Buddhism in a concise and heartfelt way, this is the book for you!

This sutra is an excellent introduction to Buddhism. I highly recommend this sutra to get a feel for the teachings that the Buddha was preaching.

SchopenhauerLearning from the Philosopher Schopenhauer

What is the Meaning of Life? How to Live in an Age of Despair - My Thoughts on Reading Schopenhauer

It was quite a demanding time reading, thinking about, and writing about Schopenhauer's book. I felt several times more fatigued and depressed than usual.

But that is why I also felt that we must overcome Schopenhauer's pessimism. I felt once again that Dostoevsky and Tolstoy were the great predecessors of Schopenhauer's pessimism. I felt as if I understood a little why the great writers of that era were so earnest in their contemplation of "life.

It was precisely because it was a time of despair that they were serious about "living. And they were putting their struggles into literature.
